About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide technical leadership for the Digital Engagement portfolio
- Implement scalable architectures and guide engineering teams delivering customer engagement, personalization, communications, and data-driven experiences
- Drive engineering excellence across multiple teams and influence product strategy through technology
- Ensure software solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable
- Partner with Product Management, Engineering Leadership, Security, Architecture, and DevOps
- Mentor engineers and establish engineering best practices
- Define architectural decisions improving performance, reliability, maintainability, scalability, and security
- Lead development of scalable, secure, cloud-native services across multiple products, stacks, and cloud providers
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies
- Serve as the highest-level technical escalation point for complex engineering challenges
- Drive technical roadmaps aligned with business objectives
- Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade applications primarily in PHP/Laravel and additionally C#/.NET
- Lead application refactoring, cloud migration, monolith decomposition, framework upgrades, and technical debt reduction
- Develop highly available cloud applications using AWS services and equivalent Azure and Google Cloud services
- Optimize database performance through schema design, indexing, query optimization, caching, and database architecture
- Develop highly testable, maintainable, and reusable software components
- Lead adoption of AI agents across the engineering lifecycle
- Champion clean architecture, Domain-Driven Design, spec-driven development, and secure coding standards
- Establish development standards, coding guidelines, testing strategies, and deployment processes
- Lead architecture, code, design, and technical planning reviews
- Improve automated testing, observability, monitoring, and application performance
- Own deployment practices using continuous small changes and feature flags
- Partner with Product Management and Engineering Managers on technical solutions and investments
- Influence technical decisions across multiple engineering teams
- Communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Mentor engineers through coaching, code reviews, pair programming, and architecture guidance
- Foster engineering excellence, innovation, ownership, and continuous learning
- Help establish career development paths and technical competency standards
- Lead technical knowledge sharing through presentations, documentation, and architecture discussions
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis for critical production issues
- Improve observability, monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness
- Promote automation across development, deployment, testing, and infrastructure
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience
- 5+ years designing enterprise-scale distributed systems and cloud-native applications
- Experience serving as a technical lead, staff engineer, or principal engineer
- Expert-level proficiency with PHP
- Experience with modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony
- Expert-level proficiency with MySQL / Amazon Aurora MySQL
- Expert-level proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Expert-level proficiency with RESTful APIs and web services
- Proficiency in C# and modern .NET, including ASP.NET Core and Azure Functions
- Deep experience in one major cloud provider and working comfort in another; AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud experience
- Comfort with TypeScript and at least one of React, Vue, or Angular
- Experience with containerized application development and deployment using Docker, Kubernetes, or similar technologies
- Experience with CI/CD, DevOps best practices, observability, application performance monitoring, and event-driven architectures
- Experience designing RESTful APIs, service-oriented architectures, and distributed systems
- Experience with OAuth, SSO integration, API authentication, secrets management, and security best practices
- Expertise with automated unit, integration, API, and end-to-end testing
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, organization, and leadership skills
- Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams
- Ability to work efficiently in a remote work environment
- Ability to handle extended computer-based work and collaborate via Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other meeting technologies
- Domestic and/or international travel required, estimated up to 5%
- Desired: church technology, nonprofit SaaS, or multi-tenant CMS and website-builder products
- Desired: AWS services including EC2, Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3, SQS, and CloudFront
- Desired: video streaming and media pipelines, including AWS MediaLive, MediaPackage, HLS, and transcoding services
- Desired: high-volume messaging and alerting through Twilio, SendGrid, or similar APIs
- Desired: search platforms such as Solr, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Algolia
- Desired: Linux-based web application administration and optimization
- Desired: infrastructure as code, especially Terraform and Helm charts
