About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Advise students, parents, and high school guidance counselors on career and program major choices, curriculum, admissions and enrollment procedures, business office policies, financial aid, and housing options
- Advise monolingual and bilingual students and their families as part of an assigned caseload
- Support bilingual outreach and family events across all three campuses and surrounding communities
- Assist students with course selection, tutorial assistance, campus activities, and transition from high school to college
- Discuss academic progress, course selections, and career goals with students speaking different languages
- Assist with admission and registration documents
- Provide assessment preparation resources and interpret assessment scores for course placement or referrals
- Work with faculty to support student success
- Interpret Riverland, Minnesota State System, state, and federal statutes, policies, and guidelines and translate them into advising procedures and services
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with students to overcome achievement barriers
- Plan and implement academic, career, financial aid, and transfer support activities
- Develop retention activities, workshops, and individual sessions on cultural enrichment, stress management, time management, decision-making, financial literacy, study skills, major selection, and career exploration/development
- Track and report student academic progress toward graduation and other goals
- Identify at-risk students and develop academic recovery plans and retention strategies
- Maintain student record data integrity, reliability, and accuracy
- Maintain confidentiality of student information under FERPA
- Refer students to campus and community resources
- Supervise work-study students when appropriate
- Participate in bilingual enrollment activities, community events, partnership building, orientation, and new student registration
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum three (3) years of related work experience OR Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years of related work experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- An associate degree may substitute for 6 months of experience; a bachelor’s degree for 12 months; and a master’s degree for 18 months within social sciences, psychology, or related disciplines
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse and traditionally underserved backgrounds
- Computer software applications and systems sufficient to manage and query data and create business correspondence, reports, and training presentations
- Effective written communication and public speaking skills
- Human relations/customer service skills sufficient to understand student needs and provide accurate information and alternatives
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Fluency in Spanish, Karen, Karenni, Somali, Pohnpeian, French, Nuer, Anuak, or other languages reflecting the student body, workforce, and communities
- Demonstrated experience working with multicultural and underserved populations

- Must be legally authorized to work in the US; Minnesota State is unable to sponsor work visas
- Preferred: Master’s degree in higher education, social science psychology, or related field
- Preferred: Two or more years of experience working in Student Affairs in Higher Education
- Preferred: Previous Minnesota State experience related to Student Affairs
- Preferred: Knowledge of college policies, procedures, programs, curriculum, services, and resources
- Preferred: Experience with student record systems, project management, ISRS, Workday, Degree Audit, Perceptive Content, and SharePoint
