About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support a Prostate Cancer UK-funded project investigating the tumour immune microenvironment in prostate cancer
- Conduct experimental work involving human and mouse tissue/cells
- Gain familiarity with human and mouse models of prostate cancer and conduct experiments initially under supervision, then independently
- Support laboratory activities including advanced mouse models, tissue processing, molecular and cellular biology techniques, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, and spatial profiling studies
- Maintain accurate, secure, detailed, and up-to-date records of work
- Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve problems and investigate replacement options
- Complete and update safety paperwork and oversee compliance tasks
- Provide health and safety support and advice
- Schedule, prioritize, and monitor work according to demands and deadlines
- Attend research seminars and departmental meetings
- Present results to academic leads and the wider group
- Plan, operate, and supervise laboratory spaces under delegated responsibility
- Collaborate with other areas to improve efficiency and eliminate duplicated effort
- Contribute to service development, delivery, and planning
- Monitor resource usage and stores operations
- Create, update, and implement laboratory procedures
- Provide skilled research and teaching support
- Prepare and manufacture specimens and samples with limited direction
- Design, develop, and deliver inductions, demonstrations, and training
- Assist managers in identifying training and development needs
- Perform out-of-hours work if required and other duties within the scope of the role
Requirements
What you’ll need- Thorough working knowledge of Health and Safety procedures
- Experience of safe waste management within a workshop/laboratory environment
- Demonstrable experience of working with animal models of disease, including mouse models
- Demonstrable work experience in at least three relevant technical laboratory roles, such as flow cytometry, PCR, ELISAs, sterile cell culture, histology, or immunohistochemistry
- Excellent team working skills
- Technical and problem-solving capability
- Good organising ability to meet deadlines, with a positive and proactive approach and attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to changes in teaching/research priorities
- BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent in a biosciences subject or related field, or equivalent experience in this area
- Passion for cancer research
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly
- Eagerness to develop new skills
