About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build the in-house finance function from 0 to 1
  • Run US and India payroll, working with the HR manager on joiners, leavers and changes
  • Own payments to tens of thousands of farmers, maintaining accurate records, reconciled payouts and an audit trail
  • Invoice customers, track collections, manage third-party invoices and payment runs, and track and report grant funding
  • Own banking relationships and bank portals
  • Reconcile and close monthly books for US and Indian entities
  • Prepare for and manage annual statutory audits
  • Coordinate external chartered accountants, auditors and tax specialists
  • Maintain reliable data for forecasting, variance analysis and unit economics
  • Map transactions to cost categories and tag spend to farming seasons and credit vintages
  • Take increasing ownership of forecasting, cash and runway planning, strategic modelling, and board and investor reporting
  • Deliver US and India tax and regulatory filings, including GST, TDS and RBI/FEMA filings
  • Own finance and payroll platforms and implement financial controls
  • Review expenses and reimbursements, roll out company cards, and review reimbursement policy and software spend
  • Automate and document finance processes
  • Manage intercompany reconciliation, transfer pricing and treasury between US and Indian entities
  • Set up books and finance processes for new entities in the Philippines and wider South East Asia
  • Hire and manage a Finance Assistant as the function develops

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7 to 10+ years in finance operations, controllership or accounting, including time running the finance function at a startup or scale-up
  • Hands-on experience running payroll, monthly close and statutory filings in India, including GST, TDS and RBI/FEMA compliance
  • Experience with a US entity: US payroll, US book closure and working with US tax advisors
  • Working grasp of intercompany accounting and transfer pricing between a US parent and an Indian subsidiary
  • Track record of managing external accountants, auditors and tax advisors to deliver on time
  • Strong instinct for what looks normal in a set of accounts, and what doesn't
  • Confident with accounting and payroll software (Zoho Books or similar) and advanced Excel or Google Sheets
  • Fluent English
  • A professional accounting qualification: CA, CPA, ACCA or equivalent (strongly preferred)
  • Experience setting up finance operations for new entities in South East Asia (strongly preferred)
  • Exposure to FP&A: forecast models, variance analysis or unit economics (strongly preferred)
  • Experience rolling out company cards, expense tools or payroll systems (strongly preferred)
  • Experience in agriculture, climate, carbon markets or businesses with large volumes of small payments to individuals (strongly preferred)
  • Experience building and managing a small finance team (strongly preferred)
