About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead Monzo’s Global Tax team and wider finance partnership
Report to the Group Financial Controller and partner closely with the MBL Chief Financial Officer and Executive team
Advise on tax implications of new business developments, including customer products, treasury strategies, group reorganisations, mobility proposals, systems implementations, and international expansion
Define Monzo’s global tax strategy across the UK, Europe, and future markets
Set tax risk appetite and prepare reporting for the Audit and Risk Committee
Structure cross-border expansion and advise on market-entry structures, permanent establishment risks, and local compliance
Establish, document, and defend global transfer pricing and intragroup financing strategies
Oversee Direct Tax, Indirect Tax (VAT), Employment Tax, Transfer Pricing, and Operational Customer Taxes
Act as primary liaison with HMRC and international tax authorities
Manage tax audits and oversee statutory regimes including Senior Accounting Officer compliance
Advise product managers, engineers, and treasury on tax treatment for new products and initiatives
Mentor and lead a tax team of 10+ individuals
Design a tech-enabled tax operating model using AI, workflow tools, and automation across compliance, reconciliations, and contract reviews

Requirements

What you’ll need

Qualified tax professional or accountant: CTA, ACA, ACCA, ADIT, or international equivalent
Experience leading an in-house tax team at scale, ideally within banking, fintech, or a regulated multinational
Strong people leadership, coaching, and team-development track record
Practical experience with cross-border tax issues, international structuring, and transfer pricing
Understanding of operational and customer taxes in financial services, including FATCA/CRS, withholding taxes, and interest reporting
Interest and understanding of technology, data, and AI for workflow automation and reducing human error
Ability to explain complex tax positions to product leads, commercial teams, auditors, and other non-tax stakeholders
Comfort working with ambiguity and making decisions without a standard blueprint
Ability to work within the UK, with some travel to the London office expected for distributed workers
