About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support preliminary and detailed engineering assignments for wind collection, medium-voltage distribution systems, and renewable projects through 500kV
- Support Engineer of Record design packages and construction support
- Work with utility-scale substation and wind customers to connect storage and renewable generation assets to the grid
- Develop innovative designs optimizing overall cost and performance
- Interface with and present to customer decision-makers and project teams
- Provide technical support for proposals, estimating, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction
- Coordinate with engineering disciplines, Project Managers, and Design Phase Managers
- Execute design, analysis, and evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and business standards
- Perform lead engineer tasks on 1–3 large design projects
- Mentor and guide Engineering Professionals
- Review, approve, and select major equipment vendor quotes
- Collect and evaluate data to recommend courses of action
- Maintain technical documentation consistent with engineering policies and QA/QC procedures
- Perform engineering calculations, data analysis, and studies for preliminary and detailed designs
- Develop technical specifications and direct drafting and designer duties to meet schedules
- Manage multiple projects and deliver compliant detailed design packages
- Apply the equation S=P+jQ
- Verify construction against civil and protection engineering drawings, including preparatory meetings and QA/QC
- Develop and evaluate technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages
- Create detailed designs aligned with customer requirements and Mortenson best practices
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program
- Strongly preferred: degree from a school of engineering with at least one ABET-accredited professional engineering curriculum
- Engineer III: Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or achievement of EIT within 6 months, with expectation of achieving a PE license in the future
- Engineer IV: Professional Engineering (PE) license
- Engineer III: 4+ years of related experience
- Engineer IV: 7+ years of related experience
- Working knowledge of engineering software packages and Project Controls software, including Procore
- Knowledge of system integration, product adaptation, and design development for systems
- Electrical background or industry knowledge from electrical business or electrician/construction; power systems and substations preferred
- Design optimization skills considering technical parameters and economic feedback
- Familiarity with CYMCAP, CDEGS, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, ArcGIS/QGIS, and similar software
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Microsoft Excel experience for tracking and analyzing components and combinations
- T&D industry experience; energy storage, solar, and wind design experience preferred
- Experience researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making recommendations, and presenting recommendations
- Understanding of discipline-specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies
- Ability to travel up to 10%
