About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide technical leadership and support for electrical portions of 90–500+ MWdc solar collection system projects
- Coordinate PV electrical design with internal EPC teams and civil, structural, and substation engineering teams
- Lead 2–3 PV electrical design projects with the team
- Perform quality reviews of engineering designs
- Determine collection-system layouts, including overhead/underground routing, roads, cross-country routing, and junction box locations
- Review manufacturer data for wiring requirements, grounding, power factor, lightning protection, and generator outputs
- Verify construction conforms to electrical engineering design drawings
- Lead electrical engineering design through submittals, transmittals, and requests for information
- Provide technical expertise and support during bidding and throughout projects
- Communicate with owners, vendors, and local utilities to advance project electrical design
- Perform loss calculations, preliminary short-circuit calculations, and reactive-power calculations
- Perform system grounding studies in CDEGS
- Determine installation details, including conduit and grounding details
- Specify equipment ratings to support procurement
- Develop one-line diagrams for collection systems and substations and standard electrical construction details
- Collaborate with field teams to improve constructability and field work
- Participate in lessons-learned meetings
- Lead team members by example and provide coaching, feedback, and performance management
- Lead technical discussions and efficiently manage engineering work and logistics
- Build relationships with people across diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering program
- Minimum 4 years’ experience for Engineer III
- Minimum 7 years’ experience for Engineer IV
- EIT certification, or achievement of EIT within 6 months of entering the position
- PE license preferred for Engineer III; expected or acquirable within 6 months for Engineer IV
- Experience leading design and completing multiple utility-scale solar projects
- Coordination with civil and structural engineering design teams
- Understanding of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements
- Working knowledge of design and construction techniques and project management practices
- Knowledge of NEC, NESC, and IEEE codes/standards
- Familiarity with ASPEN, ETAP, PSSE, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Primtech
- Knowledge of system modeling, relay coordination studies, and protective relay settings for 34.5 kV to 500 kV systems
- Ability to travel up to 25%
- Basic understanding of engineering/construction business practices
- Developing project management and analytical problem-solving skills
- Effective communication and openness to diverse input and feedback
- Ability to sit, see, hear, and use a computer and office equipment
