About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide technical leadership and support for electrical portions of solar collection systems for 90–500+ MWdc projects
  • Coordinate PV electrical design with internal Mortenson EPC teams and civil, structural, and substation engineering teams
  • Lead 2–3 PV electrical design projects with the team
  • Review team engineering designs for quality
  • Determine optimal collection-system layouts, including overhead/underground routing, roads/cross-country routing, and junction-box locations
  • Review manufacturer data to define electrical scope, wiring requirements, grounding, power factor, lightning protection, and generator-output requirements
  • Verify construction conforms to electrical engineering design drawings
  • Lead electrical engineering design through submittals, transmittals, and requests for information
  • Provide technical expertise and answer technical questions during bidding and project execution
  • Communicate with owners, vendors, and local utilities to advance project electrical design
  • Perform loss calculations, preliminary short-circuit calculations, and reactive-power calculations
  • Perform system-grounding studies in CDEGS
  • Determine installation details, including conduit and grounding details
  • Specify equipment ratings for procurement
  • Develop one-line diagrams for collection systems and substations and standard electrical construction details
  • Work with field teams on design changes and participate in lessons-learned meetings
  • Improve engineering-work and logistics efficiency
  • Lead team members by example, coach and provide feedback, and manage performance

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience for Engineer III
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience for Engineer IV
  • EIT certification or achievement of EIT within 6 months of entering position
  • PE license preferred for Engineer III
  • PE license expected or can be acquired within 6 months for Engineer IV
  • Lead design and completed multiple utility scale solar projects, including coordination with civil and structural engineering design teams
  • Basic understanding of design and construction techniques and project management practices
  • Basic understanding of engineering/construction generally accepted business practices
  • Understanding of discipline-specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies
  • Developing project management and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Developing knowledge in system modeling, relay coordination studies, and protective relay settings for systems from 34.5 kV to 500 kV
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements
  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with ASPEN, ETAP, PSSE, CDEGS, AutoCAD, Microstation, and Primtech
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering program for Engineer IV
  • Experience in the T&D industry for Engineer IV
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Working knowledge of NEC code, NESC, and IEEE codes/standards
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
