About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Input and update all insurance information in appropriate systems
Verify insurance eligibility online or by phone
Identify primary and secondary insurance and enter information in correct COB order
Obtain claim numbers and verify claims for Workers’ Compensation and Auto Insurance
Identify pre-authorization needs and make insurance eligibility decisions using multiple online systems
Obtain and document pre-authorization for scheduled procedures
Obtain pre-authorization guidelines for emergent patients and communicate them to Utilization Management
Follow up on verification issues and communicate information to appropriate departments
Stay current on third-party billing requirements, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicare, Medicaid, and other carriers
Perform insurance verification and obtain pre- and retro-certification information for inpatient activity
Communicate relevant information to the Utilization Management team
Refer patients to Financial Counselors for financial assistance or payment arrangements when appropriate
Handle confidential medical information

Requirements

What you’ll need

Must reside in Michigan
Full-time availability, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
2 Year / Associate Degree or equivalent experience
1.5 years of related experience in healthcare
Medical experience is preferred
Well versed in medical terminology is highly preferred
Advanced keyboard, mouse, computer, and Microsoft Office skills
Ability to learn, access, and utilize 10+ listed computer programs within 90 days of hire
Knowledge of Outlook, Star Insurance Verification systems, Smart Web, PowerChart, FirstNet, 3M Coding, Ontrac and related tools, NextGen, and Cerner
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, doctors’ offices, hospital technicians, departments, and insurance companies
Ability to create accurate documentation from gathered information
Ability to perform online insurance verification through the Internet
Ability to adapt to change and complete continuing advanced education requirements
Must meet Munson Healthcare vaccination requirements for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella, or have lab-confirmed immunity
Must receive a flu vaccine during the hiring year and annually thereafter, unless granted an approved medical or religious exemption
