About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the Case Management Platform Core team
- Set architectural direction, make trade-off decisions, and own outcomes
- Write production code, review pull requests, and participate in production incident response
- Drive design reviews and raise engineering standards through example
- Own the full software development lifecycle from conception through sunset
- Hire, develop, and retain high-performing engineers
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide direct feedback, and address underperformance
- Guide career development, delegate decisions, and build a diverse, high-trust team
- Drive adoption of AI coding tools, agent orchestration, and AI-assisted operations
- Measure and communicate AI leverage and retire ineffective practices
- Partner with product management, commerce stakeholders, lab operations, and adjacent engineering teams
- Maintain relationships with lab managers, lab supervisors, and commerce leaders
- Translate business priorities into engineering plans and engineering realities into actionable business options
- Own estimates, scope, dependencies, risks, and delivery commitments
- Run lean, outcome-oriented ceremonies and remove blockers
- Lead evolution of ways of working and drive improvements beyond the immediate team
Requirements
What you’ll need- BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of professional software development experience, including meaningful experience building complex data or process-management applications
- 3+ years leading engineering teams, with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers
- Recent hands-on experience writing production code, leading design reviews, and troubleshooting production issues as a manager
- Strong fluency in Java or another object-oriented language
- Experience with modern cloud infrastructure, AWS preferred, including Lambda and other stateless/serverless patterns
- Experience with relational databases and distributed systems
- Demonstrated adoption of AI-assisted development, agent-based workflows, or similar modern engineering practices
- Experience partnering with product management, operations, and business stakeholders in a matrixed environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Comfort operating across time zones with distributed and offshore teammates
- Hands-on coding, design, and architecture skills
- Deep understanding of software architecture and the full SDLC in a regulated environment
- Proven record of managing highly effective, mission-oriented teams and building leadership bench strength
- Comfort diagnosing production problems from triage and workaround through root cause and prevention
- Expertise building scalable, resilient distributed systems on AWS
- Strong product sense and ability to challenge requirements
- Experience in biotech, healthcare, or another regulated industry is a strong plus
