Mortgage Specialist III

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Control past-due mortgage and equity delinquencies of 31+ days by reviewing account data, contacting members, and reviewing or documenting financial situations
- Ensure required collection, breach, state/regulatory, and investor notifications are sent
- Maintain accurate notes and contact histories for member interactions and account actions
- Record, track, and report member concerns to management
- Document member arrangements, delinquency reasons, and foreclosure alternatives in the collection system
- Track and update database action items
- Collect, prepare, and maintain data for analysis, reports, and reference
- Perform manager share transfers for amounts within authorized limits
- Obtain detailed financial information and offer solutions and alternatives to bankruptcy or charge-off
- Counsel delinquent members and use payment options and loss-mitigation tools to cure delinquency
- Analyze, research, and resolve account and loan problems and discrepancies
- Initiate corrective action to ensure complete and accurate account documentation
- Respond to inquiries and offer solutions to members, business units, and external organizations
- Communicate external loss-mitigation options, including Making Home Affordable programs such as HARP
- Offer repayment plans, promises-to-pay, forbearance, modifications, and deferral programs
- Explain short sales, deeds-in-lieu, foreclosure, and other property relinquishment options
- Mentor, train, guide, and assist team members
- Research, synthesize, and present data, conclusions, and recommendations to management and team members
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Significant experience performing clerical or administrative duties/responsibilities
- Significant member/customer service experience, preferably in a call center, retail banking, or financial institution
- Advanced knowledge of state and federal laws affecting delinquent mortgage and equity loan collections, real estate, bankruptcy, and foreclosure
- Significant experience resolving complex mortgage collection issues and inquiries
- Expert knowledge of NFCU, Fannie Mae, VA, Freddie Mac, and MI guidelines for mortgage collection eligibility
- Expert knowledge of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and related federal and state consumer protection rules and regulations
- Advanced knowledge of accounting, credit, and/or lending principles and techniques
- Experience leading, guiding, and mentoring others
- Experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and/or authority
- Significant experience working with complex specialized accounts/default data related to collections, bankruptcy regulations, and practices
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Advanced clerical, technical, or administrative skills
- Advanced skill interpreting and applying relevant data/instructions to guidelines, procedures, practices, and regulations
- Advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills
- Advanced database and presentation software skills
- Advanced skill exercising initiative and sound judgment
- Working knowledge of Navy Federal mortgage products, services, programs, policies, and procedures (desired)
