About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide overarching architectural leadership across a portfolio of related applications
- Partner with application architects, site reliability engineers, and delivery teams to maintain technical alignment
- Establish and sustain architecture practice, design standards, reference patterns, and shared design language
- Capture architecture decisions as Architecture Decision Records maintained in source control
- Review delivery-team designs and facilitate architectural decisions
- Guide teams toward pragmatic solutions rather than owning delivery
- Own and continuously improve the developer experience
- Identify and remove technology and process impediments
- Align organizational groups toward shared technical outcomes
- Partner with infrastructure and platform teams and align delivery and platform roadmaps
- Lead adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices and coach teams on responsible use
- Drive application and platform cost optimization
- Identify, quantify, and sequence technical debt remediation and post-implementation cleanup
- Provide architectural leadership during incident management and post-incident reviews
- Ensure systemic causes are addressed at the design level
- Understand supported product domains and business drivers
- Ensure solution architecture and design principles align with NDS IT Delivery technology direction
- Promote technology reuse across services, components, and technologies
- Protect data, systems, and networks and maintain secure, reliable, redundant, accessible systems
- Identify and pursue enterprise solution-architecture improvements
- Engage with Agile teams to deliver high-quality working software
- Maintain technical currency and expand expertise
- Work with Solution Architects to drive Nelnet technology solution architecture
Requirements
What you’ll need- US Citizenship
- Ability to obtain a 6C Federal security clearance
- BS / MS in Computer Science, Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 6 years of experience in software development
- 2 to 3 years of experience as a technical or development leader
- Strong expertise in at least one key competency
- Microsoft .NET frameworks, C#, and ASP.NET
- Microsoft IIS
- RESTful web services
- Service-based architecture
- Message-based processing
- SQL Server and/or other relational databases
- Full stack development
- Secure development practices
- NIST compliance knowledge; ISSO2 strongly desired
- Source control and CI/CD practice, including GitLab or equivalent
- Architecture artifacts and Architecture Decision Records as code
- Application integration standards and methods
- In-depth software development lifecycle knowledge
- Agile or iterative delivery exposure preferred
- Developer experience practices, build and deployment pipelines, local development setup, and feedback loops
- Technical debt quantification and remediation planning
- Application and platform cost optimization
- Hands-on fluency with AI development tooling and experience driving adoption
- JIRA, Confluence, and/or Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and business functions
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to influence technical direction without direct authority
