About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Research and analyze a broad range of legal issues, including new and evolving subject areas
  • Translate legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance for business and project teams
  • Identify legal risks and help develop practical solutions supporting mission-driven decision-making
  • Counsel internal clients on matters affecting NMDP’s mission, operations, and strategic priorities
  • Collaborate with Legal & Compliance colleagues and coordinate with outside counsel and consultants
  • Review, analyze, develop, and implement policies and procedures involving legal, regulatory, compliance, privacy, confidentiality, and operational risks
  • Work with departments and project teams to develop legally compliant practices, procedures, and workflows
  • Gather, organize, and synthesize stakeholder information for policy and procedure documents
  • Support information management policies, standard operating procedures, and retention schedules
  • Advise on the receipt, handling, use, disclosure, and maintenance of confidential, sensitive, or regulated information
  • Provide legal support for clinical research, trials, studies, innovation initiatives, informed consent, participant protections, privacy, and regulatory requirements
  • Draft, review, file, and negotiate selected legal documents and correspondence
  • Participate in special projects and cross-functional initiatives
  • Help manage outside counsel, consultants, and legal support resources
  • Assist with internal investigations, dispute resolution, litigation, and risk-management matters
  • Provide legal research and advice to Compliance, Regulatory, and Quality teams, including cell and gene therapies activities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Active, good standing membership in the Minnesota State Bar or eligibility to obtain required Minnesota licensure
  • Approximately 3–6 years of legal experience or practice
  • Preferably exposure to technology and data privacy, corporate law, health care law, regulatory matters, nonprofit law, research, compliance, contract law, or policy development
  • Working knowledge of legal research materials, methods, techniques, principles, and practices
  • Familiarity with contract, procurement, corporate, health care, privacy, and regulatory laws
  • Ability to identify legal and business risks and develop practical solutions
  • Ability to draft, review, and negotiate legal documents
  • Ability to research, analyze, and apply legal principles, facts, and precedents
  • Clear and professional communication skills, including translating legal concepts for non-legal audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while balancing detail, priorities, and risk
  • Initiative, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and willingness to learn
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with sensitive, privileged, regulated, or business-sensitive information
  • Commitment to infrequent travel
