About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review, evaluate and process development applications, including land use amendments, site plans, subdivisions, condominiums, official plan amendments, zoning by-law amendments, severances and minor variances
  • Evaluate development proposals for compliance with agency requirements, planning principles, provincial policies and municipal regulations
  • Provide planning advice and respond to land use planning inquiries from staff, Council, developers and citizens
  • Prepare planning reports, recommendations, official plan amendments, by-laws, conditions and development-related agreements
  • Conduct site inspections and review site plans under Section 41 of the Planning Act
  • Support public access, participation, public meetings, public information sessions and Committee of Adjustment processes
  • Undertake long-range policy planning projects, Official Plan and Zoning By-law reviews, growth management studies and other special projects
  • Attend Council, Committee, public and other meetings and represent Planning and Realty Services
  • Coordinate County and divisional initiatives and act as a departmental liaison
  • Oversee major planning development projects, reports and studies as assigned
  • Mentor, coach and provide leadership to planners, planning students and co-op students
  • Work after hours for public, Council, committee and open house meetings when necessary

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum four (4) year post-secondary degree in Land Use Planning or related field such as Geography or Urban Studies
  • Junior Planner: over three (3) months up to one (1) year related experience
  • Planner: over two up to and including three years of related experience
  • Senior Planner: over four up to and including five years’ experience in land use planning
  • Candidate membership with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) within 5 years of hire (Junior Planner preferred; Planner required)
  • Senior Planner: Full Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners in good standing
  • Senior Planner: Registered Professional Planner
  • Knowledge of Ontario planning legislation, Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement and applicable municipal/provincial legislation
  • GIS experience or understanding and quantitative/statistical analysis skills
  • Strong report writing, communication, presentation, negotiation, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and CityView or comparable software
  • Valid Ontario G class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to provide a driver’s abstract when requested
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act and safe work practices
  • Successful applicants must provide a current Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector where required, and verification of education
