About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide one-to-one observation for patients with suicidal/homicidal ideations, psychiatric illness, child-abuse or drug-abuse risk, confusion, or behavior problems
  • Perform no direct care activities
  • Maintain constant eye contact with the patient and never leave the patient alone, including in the bathroom
  • Observe and immediately report suicidal/homicidal gestures or threats, behavior changes, and changes in patient status to licensed or nursing staff
  • Keep the environment free of harmful items such as glass, knives, and belts
  • Prevent family members or friends from bringing outside items, including food, without nursing staff approval
  • Maintain professional detachment and do not provide advice or counseling
  • Notify nursing staff immediately whenever assistance is needed
  • Maintain required documentation/flow sheets concerning the patient's condition and reason for observation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of the required training for Medical Observers at NGHS prior to beginning the role
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to remain within constant eye contact of the patient at all times
  • Ability to remain alert, adaptable and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to observe and immediately report suicidal/homicidal gestures, threats, behavior changes, or changes in patient status
  • Ability to keep the patient environment free of harmful items
  • Ability to maintain professional detachment and refrain from offering advice or counseling
  • Ability to maintain required patient-condition documentation/flow sheets
  • Ability to read, write, reason, talk, and keyboard
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs frequently
  • Preferred: One (1) year of experience in a health care facility as a Sitter, Clinical Tech, or Unit Assistant
