About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build systems that let knowledge workers use fast, scalable databases without becoming database administrators
- Set architectural direction and roadmap for a new product from early alpha to general availability
- Work directly with early customers to shape foundational technical and product decisions
- Provision and manage fleets of customer Postgres instances
- Design safe evolution of user-defined schemas
- Improve complex query execution, indexing, and client data loading as datasets and workflows grow
- Make schema changes, concurrent writes, permissions, and recovery reliable
- Turn database provisioning, migrations, and indexes into an approachable product experience
- Automate database provisioning and fleet operations
- Strengthen observability and evolve architecture to support many customers
- Collaborate with teammates and customers to identify problems, ship practical solutions, and evolve them with usage
- Work across Postgres, Go, TypeScript, Node.js, and React systems
Requirements
What you’ll need- Production relational database experience, such as Postgres or MySQL
- Experience making schema and index decisions, analyzing database performance, and debugging transactions, locking, or concurrency issues
- 10+ years of experience building and operating production software
- Track record of setting technical direction and leading complex, cross-team initiatives from concept through delivery
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals, including concurrency, failure handling, retries, partial failures, consistency, and reliable reads and writes
- Systematic performance analysis using query plans, traces, profiles, and experiments
- Product judgment and ability to translate customer problems into technical approaches
- Backend depth and willingness to work across the stack
- Fluency with AI-assisted engineering, including understanding and validating AI-generated results
- Experience managing database fleets or building database platforms, including provisioning, upgrades, backups, and recovery (nice to have)
- Deep Postgres expertise (nice to have)
- Experience building query layers, sync engines, change-data-capture pipelines, permission systems, or reusable data abstractions (nice to have)
