About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Greet patients and guests courteously by telephone or in person
  • Initiate appointment scheduling and complete patient check-in, registration, and admission processes
  • Obtain and verify patient identification and demographic information for permanent medical records
  • Provide customer service to patients, guests, and family members
  • Complete required forms and gather accurate paperwork and documents
  • Collect and input patient and guarantor demographic and financial information
  • Explain insurance benefits and collect co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay amounts
  • Verify insurance through electronic verification, telephone, or web applications
  • Perform financial analysis and inform patients of their financial responsibility
  • Balance the cash drawer daily, prepare deposit slips, and complete closing cash-drawer procedures
  • Adapt communication and behavior to specific patient populations while respecting privacy
  • Collaborate across departments and support multiple patient and payer functions through cross-training
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, standards, regulations, privacy, and safety requirements
  • Report known or suspected unethical, questionable, privacy, safety, or compliance-related concerns

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital, clinic, medical office, business services/revenue cycle, or other customer service-related environment
  • Experience may include front line registration, financial counseling, banking, retail, or similar roles involving direct customer or patient interaction
  • Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications, role-specific software packages, and keyboard
  • Clerical skills and technical knowledge of healthcare insurance benefits, payer referral and authorization guidelines, and current federal, state, and local billing regulations
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management, conflict resolution, decision-making, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills
  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle high-stress situations professionally
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in handling and escalating difficult situations
  • Preferred certifications: CHAM, CHAA, Medical Assistant, or other medical specialty-based certification
  • Must maintain knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Must comply with the employer’s Compliance & Privacy Program and Standards of Conduct
