About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide medical forensic exams to victims of intentional and/or interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking
- Practice forensic nursing according to state and national guidelines, the Ohio Revised Code, and IAFN standards
- Collect comprehensive patient and law-enforcement information
- Complete detailed patient/victim histories
- Prioritize data collection, including photographic documentation and body diagrams
- Perform head-to-toe assessments to identify life-threatening injuries and support diagnosis and treatment
- Use evidence-based assessment techniques and instruments to collect, analyze, and document patient data
- Collect forensic evidence using Ohio Department of Health kits and applicable protocols
- Identify and report life-threatening injuries or trauma to physicians
- Develop nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems
- Develop safety plans with law enforcement, patients, families, and advocates
- Coordinate follow-up care, including STI/HIV testing and trauma-informed care
- Modify expected outcomes based on patient status and situation evaluations
- Testify in court regarding forensic examinations, collected items, photographic documentation, and medical records
- Perform duties with focus on safety, quality, and efficiency
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate's Degree (Required)
- Current RN - Registered Nurse license from the State of Ohio
- BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
- SANE-A - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - Adult/Adolescent - Forensic Nursing Certification Board
- SANE - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - International Association of Forensic Nurses
- Minimum of one year of service with OhioHealth
- Must complete 40+ hours of didactic training
- Must perform speculum exams under the direct supervision of a physician/NP/PA until competent
- Must complete 3 sexual assault exams with an experienced forensic nurse, on a patient or in a simulation environment
- Must commit to being on call a minimum of 48 hours per month for the assigned area
- Must attend bi-monthly meetings and continuing educational opportunities
- Must commit to providing 2 years of service as a forensic nurse after training is completed
- Availability to work variable shifts and as-needed hours
