About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Research, design, and train foundation models on OnePay’s customer, transaction, and merchant data using transformer and/or graph-based architectures
Run experiments and rigorously evaluate results
Turn promising findings into a working prototype
Work closely with Product, Engineering, Analytics, and Applied Science teams across business units
Help provide a remarkable customer experience, drive positive business outcomes, and improve operational efficiency
Drive significant impact on the company’s bottom line
Report to the Head of AI/ML
Participate in a full-time, 8-week internship program in the NYC office

Requirements

What you’ll need

Final-year graduate student in the final year of a master’s or PhD program, expected to graduate in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028, majoring in Engineering or a related field
Strong grasp of neural networks, including backpropagation, attention, embeddings, optimization, and training dynamics
Implemented, trained, or fine-tuned models through research, coursework, or personal projects
Comfortable working in PyTorch or an equivalent framework
At least one previous internship in research, machine learning, or software engineering, or substantial personal or academic projects
Available for a full-time, 8-week program running June 21–August 13, 2027
Available to work in the New York City office at least 3–4 days a week throughout
Act-like-an-owner mentality and ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment
Critical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
Passion for learning and growing in a rapidly growing startup
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; OnePay will not sponsor applicants who need employment-sponsored visas and future sponsorship will not be considered
Familiarity with transformer-based foundation model architectures, including pre-training, fine-tuning, inference, and tradeoffs between approaches (nice to have)
Exposure to graph-based learning or graph foundation models, such as GNNs, message passing, or representation learning on graph-structured data (nice to have)
Coursework or projects involving Large Language Models or Generative AI (nice to have)
Research output such as publications, workshop papers, or open-source contributions (nice to have)
