About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the COO’s principal integrator and senior adviser on complex strategic, operational and organizational issues
  • Lead the Office of the COO and manage priorities, operating rhythms, quality standards and accountability for a multidisciplinary team of four
  • Represent the COO with executive leadership, senior leadership and governance forums
  • Strengthen collaboration and accountability across Operations and partnerships with Programs and executive offices
  • Lead the institutional effectiveness agenda, including operating model maturity, organizational design, decision rights, governance, process optimization and continuous improvement
  • Diagnose systemic organizational issues and lead interventions to improve institutional performance and organizational health
  • Design and embed enterprise-wide effectiveness frameworks, management disciplines and accountability mechanisms
  • Direct complex cross-organizational initiatives and enterprise projects
  • Translate organizational and executive priorities into integrated outcomes, milestones, ownership, resources and measures
  • Establish enterprise performance reporting and executive dashboards
  • Lead performance reviews, identify variances and risks, define corrective actions and escalate issues
  • Strengthen enterprise risk visibility and preparedness
  • Lead COO governance forums and ensure disciplined agendas, decision records, accountability and follow-through
  • Broker resolution of complex cross-functional issues and protect coherence between functional accountability and enterprise outcomes
  • Lead organizational responses to emerging priorities, disruptions and sensitive matters
  • Oversee the Office of the COO budget, contracts and resource plan
  • Shape culture and ways of working across the COO portfolio
  • Handle highly confidential and politically sensitive matters with discretion and integrity
  • Drive continuous improvement through process re-engineering

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Substantial senior leadership experience operating at enterprise level in a complex, global and matrixed organization
  • Sustained record of advising C-suite or equivalent executives on high-stakes strategic, operational, organizational and governance matters
  • Demonstrated success leading institution-wide transformation, operating model, organizational effectiveness or strategy-execution agendas
  • Experience directing a portfolio of complex, interdependent initiatives and resolving contested priorities
  • Ability to influence executive and senior stakeholders without formal authority and negotiate durable outcomes
  • Experience designing and embedding governance, performance, risk, portfolio management or organizational-health frameworks
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing teams and coordinating direct and indirect reporting relationships
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement in politically sensitive, confidential and high-ambiguity environments
  • Strong financial and resource stewardship experience, including oversight of budgets, contracts and investment choices
  • Experience working across cultures and jurisdictions
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of additional languages is an asset
  • Travel is required
