About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the Olfactory Intelligence team of ML engineers and research scientists
  • Hire, level, and grow team members across formulation, prediction, and generative models
  • Set the model roadmap across formula generation, reformulation, molecule generation, deformulation, odor prediction, and customer-specific property models
  • Run the OI benchmark suite, internal quality gates, contractual acceptance criteria, and model cards
  • Own contractual model deliverables, hard accuracy gates, and quarterly deadlines
  • Design experiments and annotation protocols with Sensory Science and Fragrance Development
  • Define KPIs that convert panel time into model gains
  • Partner with Software Platform and Product Engineering to ship reliable production APIs with versioning, monitoring, and drift handling
  • Read code, review diffs, challenge evaluation design, and run experiments
  • Make prioritization decisions across model initiatives
  • Collaborate with Chemistry, perfumers, and evaluators to ground model output in human olfactory perception
  • Define and enforce the standard for excellent applied ML at Osmo
  • Report to the CTO and work across Software Platform, Product Engineering, Chemistry, Sensory Science, perfumers, and evaluators

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of industry ML/AI experience in an applied or research capacity
  • Models shipped to real users, not only papers or prototypes
  • Experience managing, hiring, leveling, and growing ML engineers or research scientists
  • Team lead experience with real ownership
  • Depth in at least one of: generative models over structured or discrete objects, molecular or chemical ML, multi-modal representation learning, LLM systems and evaluation, or Bayesian and experimental design
  • Rigorous model evaluation skills, including baseline analysis, test-set leakage detection, and metric interpretation
  • Experience owning models in production, including versioning, monitoring, drift, and on-call
  • Ability to work with small, noisy, expensive data and human perceptual labels
  • Chemistry, chemoinformatics, sensory science, or biology experience is a way to stand out
  • Experience with enterprise or contract-research model deliverables is a way to stand out
  • Experience standing up an ML platform or evaluation infrastructure from scratch is a way to stand out
  • Must work 3 days per week in the Elizabeth, NJ or Somerville, MA office
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
