About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Evaluate residents with speech, language, cognitive, communication, and swallowing disorders
- Determine speech therapy needs, functional limitations, and rehabilitation potential in accordance with physician orders and facility policies
- Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans
- Provide skilled speech therapy services in accordance with physician orders and established care plans
- Educate residents, families, and caregivers on treatment goals, techniques, home exercise and maintenance programs, safety, and aspiration prevention
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, residents, and families regarding progress, goals, and discharge planning
- Complete timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in medical records and according to facility, governmental, and payer requirements
- Participate in Resident Care conferences, Utilization Review meetings, Rehabilitation meetings, care plan meetings, and discharge planning
- Conduct in-services and training for facility staff
- Assist the nursing department with training Restorative Aides
- Supervise Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellows and students, if applicable
- Recommend and facilitate ordering durable medical equipment to support resident independence in swallowing and cognition
- Maintain a safe treatment environment through infection control, safety, and equipment maintenance protocols
- Contribute to quality assurance, performance improvement initiatives, and facility rehabilitation program development
Requirements
What you’ll need- Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- Current Speech-Language Pathologist License (State Requirements)
- Licensed as a Speech Therapist in the state and maintain a license in good standing
- Employee must meet continuing education requirements per state practices
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) preferred
- Experience in skilled nursing or rehabilitation settings preferred, but not required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology; preferred graduates of Masters or Doctorate Program in Speech-Language Pathology
- Proficient in computer skills such as inputting data into programs such as Net Health and Point Click Care
- Ability to read technical procedures and comprehend policy and procedure manuals
- Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions
- CPR certification, if required by licensure
- Ability to stand and walk frequently, sit occasionally, and perform required physical movements
- Ability to reach, push, pull, lift, and manipulate objects and equipment, including exertion that may exceed 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, or 20 pounds constantly
- Effective communication, including talking and hearing, and ability to perceive environmental cues
- Ability to assist, support, and transport residents using safe resident handling practices
