About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Manage multiple projects through direct reports and potentially directly manage software development projects
Ensure project delivery through supervision of costs, methods, and staffing
Set operational targets and drive engineering KPI rigor around unit test coverage, uptime/resiliency, and execution velocity
Deliver projects and continuous improvement affecting up to three domains
Resolve highly complex or unique technical situations affecting business success or future products and technologies
Create roadmaps for multiple scrum teams and translate operational strategy into resourcing plans
Lead and develop an engineering team building and scaling Venmo Commerce products used by millions
Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and business teams to identify customer problems and shape the roadmap
Own technical direction and guide architecture and engineering decisions
Build the team through hiring, coaching, feedback, career development, and organizational design
Give engineers ownership, context, and autonomy
Drive execution across complex initiatives, identify risks, and navigate dependencies and changing priorities
Maintain engineering quality, reliability, security, and operational excellence
Work across Venmo and PayPal on cross-product, platform, and organizational problems
Build a culture of learning, ownership, challenge, and customer focus
Help the team use AI effectively in development, testing, debugging, and operations

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR any equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience leading others
Significant experience leading software engineering teams and delivering complex products at scale
Track record of building, developing, and retaining strong engineering teams
Strong technical judgment and ability to guide architecture and engineering decisions
Experience building large-scale distributed systems
Familiarity with modern mobile, web, and backend architectures
Experience taking products or major capabilities from idea through launch, iteration, and scale
Strong product instincts and customer-first mindset
AI fluency and hands-on experience using modern AI tools in software development
Ability to operate in ambiguity and structure complex problems
Strong cross-functional leadership skills
Clear communication and ability to explain complex technical decisions
Track record of delivering commitments without sacrificing engineering quality or team health
Experience with payments, fintech, or highly available financial systems is nice to have
Experience building consumer products at significant scale is nice to have
Background in commerce, marketplaces, social products, or platform businesses is nice to have
Experience building products or tools for merchants and small businesses is nice to have
Experience working in fast-moving and large-scale engineering environments is nice to have
Experience leading teams across multiple locations or time zones is nice to have
