About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, develop and maintain Oracle APEX applications from data model through user interface, security and deployment
Write and optimise SQL and PL/SQL packages, procedures, functions and triggers
Build, schedule and monitor ETL/ELT data pipelines between Oracle and other systems
Implement data validation rules, reconciliation checks and exception handling
Tune queries, pipelines and APEX pages using execution plans, indexing and partitioning
Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD and technical documentation
Support live services by investigating and resolving incidents and data defects
Own data pipelines that ingest, transform and validate data from internal and external sources
Work with business SMEs, product owners, architects, QA engineers and fellow developers
Explain technical designs and decisions clearly to non-technical colleagues
Deliver Oracle database solutions and APEX applications for Pearson’s TOpS programme

Requirements

What you’ll need

Strong hands-on experience with Oracle Database 19c or later
Expert SQL and PL/SQL, including packages, bulk processing (BULK COLLECT/FORALL), dynamic SQL, collections and robust exception handling
Relational data modelling and normalisation, with understanding of dimensional/data warehouse design
Performance tuning using execution plans, indexing, partitioning and Oracle diagnostic tools
Commercial experience designing, building and supporting Oracle APEX applications on recent releases
Confident use of interactive reports and grids, forms, faceted search, dynamic actions, processes, validations and shared components
Experience implementing authentication and authorisation schemes, role-based access and APEX security practices
Experience building and consuming REST services using ORDS and APEX REST Data Sources
JavaScript, HTML and CSS for customising the APEX user interface
Experience managing the APEX application lifecycle, including exports, supporting objects, environment promotion and source control
Experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines, including staging, transformation, incremental loading and CDC concepts
Experience with DBMS_SCHEDULER, external tables, SQL*Loader, Data Pump or DBMS_CLOUD
Experience integrating CSV, JSON and XML files and APIs from multiple sources
Experience implementing pipeline monitoring, logging and alerting
Experience designing data validation rules, constraints and reconciliation checks
Experience with data profiling, cleansing, de-duplication and exception handling
Understanding of data lineage, auditability and UK GDPR obligations
Git (Bitbucket) version control for database and APEX code
CI/CD for database changes using SQLcl, Liquibase or similar
Automated testing, including PL/SQL unit testing such as utPLSQL
Jira, Kanban boards and agile delivery methods
Excellent organisational, communication and planning skills; proactive and self-motivated
Suitable commute from the chosen base office
Desirable: Oracle integration/data quality tools, OCI or Autonomous Database, Oracle on AWS, recent APEX capabilities, Oracle certification, Python or shell scripting, Power BI or Oracle Analytics, education/assessment or regulated-environment experience, Jira and Confluence, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office
