About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build, and ship full-stack features for Alfie, owning work from data models and API layers through user experience.
  • Build and operate backend microservices in TypeScript or Python, Postgres, and AWS on Kubernetes.
  • Build React/TypeScript frontend experiences, including conversational and streaming interfaces.
  • Apply prompt design, tool/function calling, multi-step agent reasoning, and evaluation to LLM-based and agentic systems.
  • Design recovery paths, human-in-the-loop handoffs, and user experiences for uncertain or failed AI responses.
  • Prototype new interaction patterns as models and agent capabilities evolve.
  • Build observability and evaluation into AI systems and improve agents using production evidence.
  • Troubleshoot backend, frontend, and AI-specific production issues.
  • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code; mentor junior engineers; contribute to design and code reviews.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver features end to end.
  • Report to the Engineering Manager, with day-to-day work led by the Staff Software Engineer.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, full-stack, with real depth on both the backend and the frontend.
  • Proficient in TypeScript or Python.
  • Strong experience building database-backed services with Postgres or a similar relational database, including schema design, query writing, and performance understanding.
  • Strong command of modern frontend development with React/TypeScript, including backend-service, API, and real-time/streaming-data integration.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience building LLM-powered or agentic products.
  • Experience shipping a conversational AI interface used by real end users.
  • Solid understanding of LLM design patterns, prompt engineering, and observability/instrumentation for agentic systems.
  • Experience building and deploying services in a containerized, Kubernetes-based environment or comparable orchestration.
  • Comfort with AWS.
  • Solid computer science fundamentals and system design instincts.
  • Track record of building products beyond standard CRUD apps and dashboards.
  • Lean mindset focused on customer value, minimizing waste, optimizing workflows, and iterating quickly.
  • Comfort working collaboratively in a remote, fast-paced environment.
