About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Build and ship backend features and services using TypeScript or Python, Postgres, and AWS services including Lambda, Fargate, API Gateway, and S3 in a serverless environment.
Pick up frontend work using React/TypeScript when features require end-to-end development.
Learn and contribute to LLM-based systems, including prompt handling, tool/function calling, and observability.
Write clean, well-tested code and incorporate code review feedback.
Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver features end-to-end.
Troubleshoot production issues, including backend debugging and AI-specific failure modes such as bad model output, latency, and dropped tool calls.
Stay current with emerging backend and AI engineering tools and practices and share learnings with the team.
Report to the Engineering Manager, with day-to-day work led by the Staff Software Engineer.

Requirements

What you’ll need

2–3 years of professional software engineering experience, with backend-heavy work.
Proficient in TypeScript or Python.
Experience building database-backed features on a relational database (Postgres or similar), including working with schemas and writing queries.
Experience building real features with React/TypeScript or similar.
Solid computer science fundamentals, including data structures, APIs, and system design.
Production-level experience with LLM/AI, not just personal or school projects.
Lean mindset focused on delivering value, asking good questions, and iterating quickly on feedback.
Comfort working collaboratively in a remote, fast-paced environment.
Genuine desire to grow into a senior backend engineer.
Legally authorized to work for any employer in Canada.
Located in Toronto, Ontario.
Able to work in-office Monday through Wednesday.
Able to work within the PST timezone, up to 4pm PST.
