About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and manage all hospitals in the assigned area to drive hospital growth and deliver performance objectives
  • Manage, develop, mentor, evaluate, and coach hospital veterinarians and medical leaders
  • Provide medical support to relief doctors as needed
  • Conduct in-hospital evaluations to improve hospital flow and efficiencies
  • Serve as primary medical contact for Petco-owned hospitals and ensure policy, procedure, and legal compliance
  • Oversee radiation safety, equipment maintenance, compliance programs, and controlled substance compliance
  • Ensure Vetco Total Care hospitals uphold Petco standards, mission, and values
  • Support escalated client concerns, professional liability submissions, and potential small claims proceedings
  • Monitor veterinarian adherence to medical standards and review medical records to provide feedback and direction
  • Review and analyze key metrics to improve veterinarian production
  • Maintain positive work environments that foster efficiency, profitability, and partner retention
  • Practice high-quality medicine as needed
  • Assist with recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding
  • Support hospital performance, operating and capital budgets, financial objectives, and budget expectations
  • Travel frequently between area hospital locations, with up to 20% overnight travel
  • Hold relevant permits and responsible veterinarian responsibilities as required
  • Support DEA registration responsibilities
  • Obtain veterinary licensure in every state where assigned hospitals are located
  • Disseminate knowledge to improve patient and client care
  • Directly supervise veterinarians within the assigned region

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school or its equivalent
  • Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the states in which the assigned hospitals are located or ability to obtain by start date
  • Current DEA license
  • Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable, in states in which the assigned hospitals are located or ability to obtain by start date
  • USDA Category I Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date
  • Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • At least 4 years of clinical practice experience
  • Strong knowledge of medical operations, medical quality, Petco SOP compliance, veterinary practice acts, team education, medical case discussions, equipment, and formulary medical use
  • General understanding of business financials
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to travel frequently between regional hospital locations with potential for up to 20% overnight travel
  • Previous medical leadership experience preferably in a multi-unit setting
