About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Define and drive the long-term technical vision for indexing and retrieval infrastructure across Core, Ads, and Shopping
- Align architecture investments to improvements in freshness, quality, coverage, reliability, and cost efficiency
- Lead cross-organizational modernization of Pinterest’s indexing architecture
- Advance unified real-time and incremental retrieval systems for high-scale candidate generation
- Partner with engineering, product, ML, and infrastructure leaders to align priorities and resolve tradeoffs
- Guide system design, architecture reviews, and complex platform changes spanning ingestion, indexing, retrieval, and quality evaluation
- Build shared metrics, tuning surfaces, and debugging workflows
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders
- Use AI to accelerate analysis, prototyping, system design iteration, technical investigations, design artifacts, and platform insight synthesis
Requirements
What you’ll need- Deep expertise building and evolving large-scale indexing, search, recommendation, or ads retrieval systems
- Experience with real-time and incremental architectures, relevance tradeoffs, and cost-efficient distributed infrastructure
- Strong technical leadership across multiple teams or organizations
- Track record of influencing direction, aligning stakeholders, and driving complex platform decisions to completion
- Experience leading large modernization efforts, architectural convergence, legacy-system migrations, shared-platform rollouts, or new infrastructure capabilities at scale
- Exceptional systems thinking and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication skills for senior technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience using AI in technical analysis, prototyping, design exploration, documentation, or information synthesis
- Experience validating AI-assisted work through testing, source-checking, peer review, and engineering judgment
- High integrity, ownership, and care with sensitive data and production-critical systems
- Thoughtful use of AI with attention to privacy, safety, and correctness
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent experience
