About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own availability, recoverability, and performance for SQL Server platforms in the acquired data estate
  • Build and maintain a documented inventory of the SQL Server estate, including instances, editions, licensing, sizes, growth rates, dependencies, job schedules, and consumers
  • Validate backup strategies against Recovery Point Objectives and perform scheduled test restores to prove Recovery Time Objectives
  • Manage high availability, including Always On, failover clustering, log shipping, and transactional replication
  • Conduct planned failover exercises
  • Establish service level objectives based on measured baselines
  • Lead database-layer incident response, including triage, mitigation, communication, and post-incident reviews
  • Own disaster recovery and contingency planning, including annual DR exercises
  • Administer, troubleshoot, extend, and develop SSIS packages, SSRS reports, T-SQL, and stored procedures
  • Automate provisioning, patching, index/statistics maintenance, integrity checks, backup verification, and environment refreshes using PowerShell, T-SQL, Python, or IaC
  • Build telemetry and alerting for data quality, job durations, wait statistics, blocking/deadlocks, storage growth, and cost
  • Write operational runbooks
  • Own database access reviews, encryption, key rotation, credential management, and patching currency
  • Serve as technical authority, participate in design reviews, and identify risks early
  • Mentor engineers and analysts and cross-train a colleague
  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation supporting a 24x7 production environment

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years in production database engineering
  • Real operational ownership of a 24x7 environment
  • Personally executed and measured database restores under pressure
  • SQL Server 2016+ expertise
  • Experience with Always On availability groups, failover clustering, and transactional replication
  • Advanced T-SQL, execution plans, and indexing strategy
  • SQL Server experience in AWS (RDS, RDS Custom, or EC2)
  • At least one on-premises-to-cloud migration
  • Experience managing SQL Agent jobs
  • PowerShell and/or Python automation experience
  • Experience maintaining legacy SSIS packages and SSRS reports
  • Experience at multi-terabyte scale
  • Proactive stakeholder communication
  • Participation in a shared 24x7 production on-call rotation
  • Preferred: experience migrating or retiring legacy Microsoft BI assets into a modern cloud data platform
  • Preferred: familiarity with AWS DMS
  • Preferred: exposure to Snowflake, dbt, or comparable modern warehouse tooling
  • Preferred: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aurora, or Azure SQL experience
  • Preferred: post-acquisition integration experience
  • Preferred: property technology, mortgage technology, or fintech background
