About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Investigate and resolve publication ethics cases for all PLOS journals
  • Resolve cases efficiently in line with PLOS standards and COPE guidance
  • Provide timely support for others’ publication ethics casework
  • Address escalations and queries about publication ethics issues
  • Contribute to tasks, cases, documentation, and processes supporting team casework
  • Contribute to team-level and cross-functional ethics and integrity initiatives and projects
  • Develop workflows and policy updates
  • Develop, trial, and implement approaches to improve detection, prevention, and resolution of publication ethics cases
  • Support journal staff editors with ethics issues during manuscript handling, peer review, or post-publication
  • Communicate with journal editorial leads, Editorial Board members, authors, PLOS teams, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in internal discussions about publication ethics and research integrity
  • Maintain awareness of cross-industry issues and initiatives and attend COPE Forums during working hours
  • Help recruit and onboard team members
  • Train staff on publication ethics case management and standards
  • Provide training and feedback to Publication Ethics team members
  • Uphold professionalism in internal and external communications

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Applications accepted from candidates based in the UK or FL, IL, MA, MD, NY, PA, TX, VA
  • Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent) in a scientific discipline
  • Experience in an editorial or publication ethics role in science, technical, and medical (STM) publishing
  • First-hand experience resolving publication ethics cases in STM publishing
  • Demonstrated aptitude for critically evaluating scientific articles or publication ethics issues
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Highly organized, efficient self-starter with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with peer review, publishing, editorial decision-making, and publication ethics issues and standards
  • Prior experience investigating and resolving publication ethics cases
  • Knowledge of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards and guidance
  • Commitment to open access and research integrity
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a remote team
  • Some flexibility to work across time zones
  • Preferred: expertise in image forensics and experience delivering trainings
  • Preferred: post-graduate research experience in a scientific, clinical, or social sciences discipline
