About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design and develop user interfaces for AI-enabled applications, dashboards, and workflows
  • Conduct user research, create wireframes and prototypes, and deliver visual and interaction designs through production front-end code
  • Build responsive, reusable components using React or Angular with TypeScript, aligned with USWDS and agency digital experience standards
  • Design AI-specific experiences including conversational interfaces, source citations, confidence cues, and clear labeling of AI-generated versus human-verified content
  • Design human-in-the-loop review screens enabling users to approve, override, reject, or escalate AI outputs with documented rationale
  • Ensure interfaces meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards
  • Test interfaces with assistive technologies using DHS Trusted Tester methods
  • Prepare an ACR/VPAT for each release
  • Plan and run usability assessments with users
  • Apply user feedback, assessment findings, and 21st Century IDEA guidance to refine designs
  • Develop user adoption and training materials including user guides, job aids, and release guidance
  • Collaborate with AI engineers, product owners, and stakeholders in two-week Agile sprints
  • Maintain designs, code, and documentation in Government-approved repositories using Government-furnished or open-source tools

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, or a related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on UI/UX design and front-end development experience
  • Portfolio showing research-driven, accessible designs
  • Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and a modern front-end framework such as React or Angular
  • Experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma or Penpot
  • Experience with wireframing, user flows, and design systems
  • Experience building interfaces conforming to Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 A and AA
  • Experience testing with screen readers and other assistive technologies
  • Experience planning and conducting usability testing and translating findings into design improvements
  • Experience working in Agile teams using Git and Jira
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder)
  • Must reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area
  • Must be able to work on-site at Government offices
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a government background investigation
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field
  • Preferred: 7+ years of experience including federal agency programs
  • Preferred: DHS Trusted Tester certification or an IAAP accessibility certification such as CPACC or WAS
  • Experience designing user experiences for AI products such as chat assistants, RAG search, or agentic workflows
  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and 21st Century IDEA requirements
  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as D3 or Chart.js and dashboard design
  • An active or prior Government background investigation preferred
