About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and grow a high-performing data engineering team
- Foster ownership, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
- Coach and develop engineers through feedback, mentorship, and career development
- Create an inclusive and collaborative team environment
- Define and drive the long-term vision for Preply's data foundation, including the Lakehouse, ingestion layers, data contracts, enrichment, and governance
- Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities with Analytics, ML Platform, Data Science, and Product teams
- Own execution and delivery by translating strategy into realistic plans and balancing platform investments with near-term needs
- Provide technical leadership across batch and streaming ingestion, data modeling, quality, and governance
- Establish SLOs, observability, and incident response for data pipelines
- Drive improvements in code quality, operational excellence, development processes, and technology evolution
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the business on priorities, data ownership, standards, and outcomes
- Own hiring quality, team composition, and operating model
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years of software or data engineering experience
- 5+ years in engineering management
- Experience leading data or platform engineering teams
- People-centric approach and team-building skills
- Strong technical judgment and systems thinking
- Experience driving architectural discussions and evaluating technical trade-offs
- Track record of hiring, coaching, and retaining high-performing teams, including senior engineers
- Experience partnering with Analytics, Data Science, ML, and Product teams
- Clear communication and stakeholder leadership
- Track record of driving performance and measurable goals
- Ethical leadership, empathy, transparency, accountability, and ownership
- Hands-on familiarity with modern data stack technologies such as Spark, Flink, Kafka, Debezium, Airflow, and dbt
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS/GCP or equivalent
- Familiarity with modern DevOps practices
- Experience leading data platforms used by multiple teams in fast-growing companies
- Experience running a data platform as a product, including data contracts, self-service onboarding, discoverability, and adoption measurement
- Experience with data governance, privacy, and compliance at ingestion time
- Familiarity with feature stores, ML data pipelines, or GenAI/RAG use cases
- Experience using Agentic AI for architecture, planning, and decision-making while retaining human judgment and establishing quality gates and safety nets
- Relocation to Barcelona prior to the start date is mandatory
- Visa sponsorship is available for relocation
