About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead and grow a high-performing data engineering team
Coach and develop engineers through feedback, mentorship, and career development
Define and drive the long-term vision for Preply’s data foundation, including the Lakehouse, ingestion layers, data contracts, enrichment, and governance
Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities with Analytics, ML Platform, Data Science, and Product
Own execution and delivery by translating strategy into realistic plans and balancing foundational investment with near-term needs
Provide technical leadership across batch and streaming ingestion, data modeling, quality, and governance
Establish SLOs, observability, and incident response for data pipelines
Drive improvements in code quality, operational excellence, development processes, and technology evolution
Collaborate with stakeholders across the business on priorities, data ownership, standards, and outcomes
Own hiring quality, team composition, and the operating model

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of software or data engineering experience
5+ years in engineering management
Experience leading data or platform engineering teams
People-centric approach and team-building skills
Strong technical judgment and systems thinking
Experience driving architectural discussions and evaluating technical trade-offs
Track record of hiring, coaching, and retaining high-performing teams, including senior engineers
Experience partnering with Analytics, Data Science, ML, and Product teams
Clear communication and stakeholder leadership
Track record of driving measurable, business-focused performance
Ethical leadership, empathy, transparency, accountability, and ownership
Nice to have: familiarity with Spark, Flink, Kafka, Debezium, Airflow, dbt, cloud platforms such as AWS/GCP, and modern DevOps practices
Nice to have: experience leading data platforms used by multiple teams in fast-growing companies
Nice to have: experience running a data platform as a product, including data contracts, self-service onboarding, discoverability, and adoption measurement
Nice to have: experience with data governance, privacy, and compliance at ingestion time
Nice to have: familiarity with feature stores, ML data pipelines, or GenAI/RAG data preparation
Nice to have: use of Agentic AI for architecture, planning, and decision-making while retaining human judgment and establishing quality gates and safety nets
