About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support multi-faceted litigation and legal advocacy projects focused on preventing authoritarianism
- Support litigation by managing and organizing case files and documents
- Prepare and finalize legal memoranda and pleadings
- Coordinate court filings
- Help lead the discovery process
- Conduct research, synthesize findings, and draft memoranda, reports, and communications
- Cite-check, Bluebook, fact-check, proofread, and assist with drafting court filings, letters, and public-facing documents
- Engage with clients, opposing counsel, partner organizations, and other external stakeholders
- Draft press releases, social media content, talking points, outreach emails, op-eds, and blog posts
- Coordinate call logistics, create agendas, and draft internal communications
- Project manage litigation components, including work plans, progress tracking, and feedback
- Maintain and create information management systems, processes, and tools across impact teams
- Strategize with team members and contribute ideas in impact and litigation project brainstorming
- Propose projects advancing Protect Democracy’s mission
- Contribute to organization-wide culture-building initiatives
- Travel periodically, including at least two team retreats annually and potentially extended travel
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of three years of filing experience in civil litigation
- Experience preparing, finalizing, and filing pleadings in court
- Experience cite checking and Bluebooking documents
- Experience drafting discovery materials and correspondence
- Experience preparing administrative documents such as pro hac vice applications
- Familiarity with federal rules of civil procedure and state/local court rules
- Case management/litigation administration experience, including managing large quantities of documents and case file/folder organization
- Strong writing, researching, editing, and proofreading skills
- Experience project managing, ideally in a legal context
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Comfort giving feedback and managing “up, down, and sideways”
- Ability to perform well in a rapid-paced environment
- Eagerness to learn new research, communications, legal, and policy skills and processes
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships and work with people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives
- Rigorous attention to detail and high standards for execution
- Ability to track, prioritize, and balance diverse responsibilities
- Passionate commitment to preserving democratic norms and institutions
- Paralegal certification preferred but not required
- Experience with Filevine preferred but not required
- Experience with e-Discovery systems such as Everlaw or Relativity preferred but not required
- Must be able to work within the United States
- Authorized to work in the United States
