About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide strategic legal advice and representation in dispute resolution and litigation matters
- Manage litigation files through investigations, pleadings, discoveries, mediations, hearings, trials, and settlement negotiations
- Represent the Region before courts, tribunals, arbitrators, mediators, and other adjudicative bodies
- Advise Regional departments on procurement-related legal risks, contractual disputes, claims management, and dispute avoidance
- Provide legal counsel on construction matters, project disputes, contract enforcement, delay claims, deficiency claims, and lien proceedings
- Lead negotiations and facilitate dispute resolution
- Prepare and review legal opinions, pleadings, factums, motions, settlement agreements, correspondence, and litigation documents
- Assess legal risk and develop proactive strategies protecting the Region’s interests
- Build relationships with client departments, external legal counsel, the public, senior leadership, and government partners
- Manage multiple litigation and advisory files while meeting critical deadlines
- Provide clear, concise, well-reasoned legal advice supported by research and analysis
- Monitor developments in litigation, construction law, procurement, administrative law, and municipal legislation
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor degree
- Call to the Ontario Bar and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
- Minimum of 1 year relevant experience as a practicing Ontario lawyer or equivalent
- International experience will be considered
- Knowledge of municipal legislation and businesses is an asset
- Off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario
