About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Oversee bi-weekly/semi-monthly payroll processing for over 1,000 employees across multiple locations and states
  • Directly oversee, train, and mentor payroll staff, reviewing their work before payroll finalization
  • Serve as final reviewer and approver for payroll runs, including hours, earnings, deductions, garnishments, and tax withholdings
  • Develop and maintain payroll processing schedules, calendars, and deadlines
  • Escalate and resolve complex payroll issues, discrepancies, and employee pay inquiries
  • Manage 401(k) and employee-benefit payroll deductions, contributions, remittances, and reconciliations
  • Ensure federal, state, and local wage, tax, withholding, reporting, and remittance compliance
  • Manage multi-state payroll tax registrations and updates for new states and locations
  • Prepare and review payroll journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations with Accounting and Finance
  • Manage payroll, workers' compensation, unemployment, financial, and 401(k) audits
  • Maintain accurate payroll records
  • Administer the payroll system and implement process improvements
  • Partner with HRIS/IT on payroll, HR, benefits, and time-and-attendance integrations
  • Lead or support payroll system implementations, upgrades, and conversions

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 2 years in a payroll management or supervisory role
  • Experience processing multi-state, multi-location payroll for 500+ employees
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state wage and hour laws, payroll tax regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Proficiency with a major payroll/HRIS platform
  • Experience administering 401(k) and employee benefits and supporting related plan and financial audits
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and reconciliation modeling
  • Exceptional customer-service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills in person, in writing, and by email
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with large payroll data sets, trends, root causes, and discrepancies
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced, high-growth, evolving environment
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Experience supporting rapid growth or multi-entity/acquisition environments
