About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide indirect and/or direct patient care within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines
- Obtain and document chief complaints, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature
- Document patient and family needs and participate in planning and implementing patient care
- Administer ordered oral, injectable, and topical medications
- Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
- Travel to other facilities or adjust hours as directed to meet patient care needs
- Maintain clean, orderly, safe, and properly supplied work areas, examination rooms, and equipment
- Assist with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient preparation, troubleshooting, health maintenance checks, and medication review
- Accurately document in electronic medical records and manage provider-directed EHR inbox messages
- Perform front desk workflows including MyChart requests, registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
- Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, labs, diagnostic tests, and follow-up visits
- Collect co-pays and order supplies
- Dispose of contaminated supplies
- Perform clinical support tasks such as handing instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing wound dressings
- Clean and sterilize instruments
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients
- Provide authorized prescription and refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider
Requirements
What you’ll need- Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the listed certifying organizations (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
- High School/GED (required)
- In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, a qualifying South Carolina health sciences program, a military medical assisting program, an approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an employer-delivered program aligned to a nationally accredited certification exam (required)
- Oncology experience a plus
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams within a high-volume environment
