About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Deliver patient care under the direction of a physician or nurse practitioner using the nursing process
- Collect and assess patient data, identify care needs, evaluate outcomes, and maintain patient care plans
- Provide education to patients, families, and staff
- Coordinate patient care with healthcare entities and team members
- Administer medications safely within organizational policies and state requirements
- Serve as a clinical and professional mentor when in a lead position
- Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to providers, supervisors, or appropriate resources
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physicians
- Travel to other facilities or adjust hours as needed to meet patient-care needs
- Maintain clean, orderly, safe, and properly equipped work areas and exam rooms
- Assist with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient preparation, troubleshooting, and medication review
- Document accurately in electronic medical records and manage EHR in-basket messages
- Perform front-desk workflows including registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
- Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and visits; collect co-pays as needed
- Order supplies, track referrals and tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies
- Perform medical-assisting procedures including specimen collection, routine laboratory tests, medication administration, instrument sterilization, injections, suture removal, and dressing changes
Requirements
What you’ll need- Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the state of employment or LPN applicant (required)
- Active Medical Assisting certification from an approved certifying organization (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association, required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations
- High School/GED (required)
- In South Carolina, completion of an approved Medical Assistant education or training program is required
- Ability to take and document vital signs
- Ability to room patients and monitor patient conditions during in-office treatments
- Ability to document medical records and administer medications/vaccinations within scope
- Ability to manage patient messages and communications, schedule tests and appointments, and perform telephonic patient triage
- Medical terminology
- Ability to use standard office equipment
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a high-volume environment
- Must perform universal precautions and use personal protective equipment
- Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, bending, and manual dexterity
- 1 year of clinical patient care experience preferred
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience preferred
- EPIC Electronic Health Record training preferred
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training preferred
