About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between patients and physician practices
  • Process patient registration, verify demographics, obtain insurance cards, and confirm patient identification
  • Greet patients and provide respectful, high-quality customer service
  • Answer, route, and manage internal and external calls
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patient appointments and services
  • Enter accurate scheduling information into the computer system
  • Process patients as they present for appointments
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly, maintain patient flow, and inform the supervisor of issues
  • Process admission paperwork and perform basic insurance verification
  • Complete, verify, and correct patient demographic and insurance information
  • Record lobby wait-time indicators
  • Calculate patient liabilities and collect and process payments
  • Reconcile the cash drawer at the end of the day
  • Perform charge entry for external services as needed
  • Schedule referrals and follow-up appointments
  • Assist patients with online scheduling and MyChart
  • Help patients obtain referrals and record them on the referral tracking tool
  • Obtain authorizations and pre-certifications for applicable procedures
  • Pull, file, maintain, and route patient charts according to office policy
  • Verify prescription benefits in the electronic health record
  • Refer patients to financial counselors and complete accounts in revenue cycle software
  • Occasionally cover other physician practice locations as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • Prior experience in patient registration/healthcare (preferred)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9 coding (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Typing and computer skills, including 40+ WPM typing skills
  • Basic math skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage with staff and patients in a professional manner
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise universal precautions and use personal protective equipment and devices
  • Ability to work in a general office environment with periods of high stress, fluctuating workloads, interruptions, high noise levels, bright lights, and possible verbal abuse
  • Required to travel by car to off-site locations occasionally, including in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to meet stated physical requirements, including lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, bending, prolonged sitting, walking, and standing
