About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead a pod of 6 to 10 engineers through weekly 1:1s, career growth, performance management, and difficult personnel decisions
- Review pull requests, ship code, and debug production systems with the team
- Turn roadmap bets into scoped work, maintain low cycle time, and ensure shipped work solves customer problems
- Own quality and reliability through review standards, tests, incidents, postmortems, and on-call
- Run the pod's interview loop, raise hiring standards, and close candidates
- Scale an AI-native team by managing review load, agent-written code, evaluations, and quality checks
- Partner with product, design, and the Chief Architect on product and technical decisions
- Lead either Product Engineering or Platform; scope grows as the team expands
Requirements
What you’ll need- 7+ years in software engineering, including 2+ years managing engineers
- Strong senior individual contributor background before management
- Experience growing a team at a startup, including hiring, setting standards, and managing performance decisions
- Daily use of AI coding agents and a concrete approach to review overload and AI-generated low-quality code
- Fluency in Python or TypeScript
- Comfort with AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform
- Direct communication and ability to give hard feedback early and kindly
- Desire to manage people
- Bonus: Early engineer at a startup that grew from seed through Series B or beyond
- Bonus: Experience building security, identity, infrastructure, or developer-tool products
- Bonus: Experience shipping to enterprise buyers with strict security and compliance requirements
- Bonus: Hands-on experience with MCP, agent frameworks, or LLM-backed products
- Bonus for Platform seat: Experience carrying a pager and running incident response for a production platform
