About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work as a Research Intern on the Tableau Research industrial research team
  • Complete a 12-week internship project agreed upon with a mentor
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, designers, and product partners
  • Explore research topics including visual analytics, conversational analytics, semantics and data preparation, human-computer interaction, machine learning, and AI-powered analytical tools
  • Scope an ambitious, achievable research question and develop a prototype within 12 weeks
  • Design and build research prototypes
  • Run user studies or other evaluations
  • Share work in progress and present research updates at team meetings
  • Incorporate feedback throughout the project
  • Deliver a final presentation and written project summary
  • Work toward turning the project into a publishable paper

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program and in good academic standing
  • At least two years of research experience
  • Record of publishing at respected conferences or journals in data visualization, human-computer interaction, databases, or machine learning
  • Ability to build functional research prototypes quickly using a programming language or framework such as JavaScript/React, Python, R, or C++
  • Ability to scope problems, prioritize important questions, and deliver results within a fixed timeline
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work with people from different backgrounds and seek feedback
  • Previous research internship experience is a plus
  • Experience setting up user studies and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data is a plus
  • User experience, interaction, or visualization design examples are a plus when relevant
  • Publications at venues such as VIS, EuroVis, CHI, UIST, SIGMOD, IUI, CSCW, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, or NeurIPS are a plus
