About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Shape the technical direction of the Maps teams
- Build geospatial systems and integrations supporting foundational features across Samsara products
- Scale storage, query, and computational capacity for real-time features
- Consolidate team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings
- Build agentic solutions enabling customers to self-serve data
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
- Partner with engineering leadership on technical priorities and tradeoffs
- Represent Samsara externally through talks, open source, and mapping/geospatial community engagement
- Build the shared geospatial platform that ingests, enriches, models, and serves map data for Samsara's products
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
- Strong programming and design fundamentals
- 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
- 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams
- Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF
- Experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving geospatial datasets
- Legal right to work at the company and in the specified work location
