About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Care for laboratory research mice and rats under supervision of the Animal Facility Manager and, at times, the Lead Husbandry Technician
- Check cages daily for adequate food and water and replenish supplies
- Change cages on the 10-day cage change cycle
- Check and correct cage card information
- Maintain animal room activity logs and husbandry records
- Maintain changing hoods, ventilated animal housing racks, and related equipment
- Perform daily animal health checks and report conditions to Laboratory Animal Technicians
- Restock room supplies and maintain storage and procedure support areas
- Clean and maintain animal rooms, support areas, and procedure labs
- Perform routine animal health treatments, blood collection, and injections as assigned
- Cross-train with LAT staff and perform breeding colony maintenance, including weaning litters and ear notching mice
- Assist with cage washroom duties
- Wash rodent cages and accessories and operate tunnel and rack washers
- Organize cleaned caging and prepare it for autoclaving
- Operate the steam autoclave and bedding dispenser
- Add nesting material to bedding-filled cages
- Prepare and label cleaning solutions
- Perform rodent euthanasia
- Clean and restock procedure rooms
- Perform other assigned related duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School diploma required
- Two years' general work experience required, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
- Ability to pass post-employment physical as required by OLAW
- Ability to work in an environment containing animal dander and dust particles
- Ability to perform repetitive arm, wrist, and hand motions; bending, lifting, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling
- Ability to lift and stack feed and bedding bags up to 40 pounds
- Ability to work 6:30–3:00 or 7:00–3:30 Monday through Friday
- Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Good time management and organizational skills
- Adherence to safety and occupational health policies and procedures
- Compliance with all training requirements
- Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, and LabTracks
- Must wear required personal protective equipment
- Certifications and licenses: None required; ALAT or LAT certification preferred
