About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Process new and renewal insurance applications, revisions, cancellations and quotes
  • Calculate premiums and apply appropriate rates, discounts and surcharges
  • Review and evaluate routine renewal applications and revisions to determine risk
  • Acquire further information about applications and risks when necessary
  • Accept, modify or escalate risks within applicable guidelines
  • Place business within subscription, reinsurance and legislative rules and restrictions
  • Explain underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers
  • Develop and maintain broker relationships
  • Promote and sell supporting products to brokers
  • Negotiate conditions, premiums and limitations for routine renewal policies in applicable situations
  • Review and dispatch underwriting submissions
  • Maintain filing systems
  • Provide administrative support to the underwriting team
  • Contribute to leadership, succession planning, professional development and workforce readiness
  • Support corporate, strategic and divisional programs and policies
  • Manage risk within area of authority and apply health, safety and emergency management policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A one-year certificate from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as business, specializing in insurance and risk management
  • 1–2 years’ directly related experience
  • Knowledge of office procedures and office equipment
  • Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of underwriting procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of insurance
  • Ability to work on-site full-time until fully trained and comfortable in the role
