About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform in-depth assessments of clients’ physical, mental health and social needs, life skills competency, employability, housing history and barriers, educational needs, financial management skills, strengths and needs
  • Administer flexible financial assistance to support client safety and stability goals
  • Provide mobile advocacy services by meeting assigned clients regularly in safe community locations
  • Provide crisis intervention and develop individualized safety plans
  • Assist victims of violence with filing protective orders and completing affidavits
  • Accompany clients to court proceedings and appointments, including attorney meetings, protective order hearings, custody hearings and housing interviews
  • Provide housing search assistance, identify housing leads, assist with unit applications and accompany clients on housing tours
  • Establish relationships with local landlords to negotiate lease terms and advocate for clients
  • Collaborate with clients on monthly budgets and provide money-management education and financial-literacy connections
  • Document client contacts in files and VADATA and maintain complete records
  • Provide domestic violence psychoeducation using tools such as The Power and Control Wheel and the Cycle of Violence
  • Empower clients and household members toward individual goals and complete ongoing service-plan reviews
  • Work with the Senior Case Manager to ensure services comply with agency philosophy, best practices and regulations
  • Collaborate with community providers and allied professionals to deliver comprehensive wrap-around services
  • Participate in staff meetings and training
  • Contribute to a multidisciplinary team with Shelter House employees, deployed staff and involved agencies
  • Use Microsoft products in day-to-day work

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A bachelor’s degree in social work/human services/related field or commensurate experience
  • 1+ years of human services or direct services experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize competing priorities and make sound judgements
  • Ability to complete tasks while navigating frequent interruptions
  • Ability to deliver creative, resourceful solutions to unique challenges
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • 10–15% local travel for appointments
  • Ability to drive a minivan
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours when needed
  • Experience with providing services to victims of domestic violence, mental health issues, and substance abuse (preferred)
  • Foreign language fluency in a language other than English, such as Spanish, Farsi, Arabic or Amharic (preferred)
  • Annual TB Test is required
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift items weighing 10–20 pounds
