About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise managers and employees on employee relations cases including grievances, disciplinary matters, performance concerns, absences and exits
  • Ensure contracts, handbooks and policies comply with employment law across countries where the organisation hires
  • Track legal changes, maintain country-specific terms and flag compliance risks
  • Ensure correct classification of permanent, fixed-term, project-funded, consultant and contractor roles
  • Audit and improve onboarding, offboarding, probation, performance review, leave and contract-change processes
  • Use AI to draft letters and policies, answer routine employee questions, clean HR data and summarise survey results safely
  • Own HRIS and people-data accuracy
  • Support payroll and benefits administration across countries
  • Produce reliable people reporting for the leadership team
  • Document and assign ownership of people processes
  • Lead the annual company offsite, including agenda, venue, travel, visas, budget, logistics and facilitation
  • Coach managers and provide tools, templates and training
  • Run engagement surveys and turn results into actions
  • Champion company culture and values and lead challenging discussions
  • Advocate for employees with leadership while balancing staff needs, company values and business priorities
  • Report to the Chief Operating Officer
  • Manage three direct reports
  • Meet managers and employees and deliver prioritised process improvements during the first year

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years in HR
  • At least 2 years leading the people function or a significant part of it, including managing a small team
  • Experience handling a wide range of employee relations cases from first conversation to final outcome
  • UK employment law experience and employment law experience in more than one jurisdiction
  • Knowledge of contracts, notice periods, leave and termination rules across multiple countries
  • Experience with Employer of Record models and local counsel
  • Experience in project- or grant-funded organisations
  • Knowledge of permanent, fixed-term, project-funded and contractor classifications
  • Ability to manage contract renewals and endings when funding changes
  • Process improvement and attention to detail
  • Confidence using an HRIS
  • Experience with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot, with examples of practical use
  • Experience planning and running in-person events, ideally company offsites or retreats for 50+ people
  • Clear written communication and ability to explain policy in plain language
  • Ability to handle difficult conversations with empathy and directness
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to sites in Africa
  • CIPD Level 5 or above or equivalent HR qualification is nice to have, not required
  • UK HR experience if working from a GMT +/- 3 hours time zone outside the United Kingdom
