About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the architecture of the payments platform, including provider integrations, deposit and withdrawal flows, and payment services used by other Fanatics businesses
Design and build distributed Java and Spring Boot services processing high transaction volumes with strict correctness, security, and uptime requirements
Build payment orchestration and routing across processors, acquirers, and payment methods using approval rate, cost, and provider health, with failover for degraded providers
Design for third-party integration failures, including timeouts, retries, idempotency, duplicate callbacks, partial failures, and reconciliation with provider and bank settlement files
Lead onboarding of new providers and banking partners, including evaluation, integration, testing, and rollout
Implement regulatory and card scheme requirements with Legal, Compliance, and Finance
Partner with Fraud and Risk on payment-path risk signals, chargebacks, and disputes
Reduce payment costs through routing, provider terms, and reduced unnecessary movement of money
Set standards for security, data handling, and limiting PCI scope
Lead architectural reviews, design sessions, incident postmortems, and mentor engineers
Partner with product, frontend, and mobile teams on consistent customer payment experiences
Set technical direction for payments across multiple teams

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of professional software engineering experience
Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot
Experience building and operating production payment systems, including deposit and withdrawal flows, payment gateway or processor integrations, card payments, or ACH
Strong understanding of idempotency, reconciliation, and failure handling with third-party providers
Experience designing secure, high-scale, low-latency distributed systems
Experience with event-driven architectures and message streaming platforms such as Kafka
Working knowledge of payment-data security and compliance requirements, including PCI DSS
Demonstrated success setting technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams
Ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs clearly to engineering, product, finance, and leadership audiences
Comfort working in a fast-paced, regulated environment with changing priorities
Preferred: experience in online gaming, sports betting, fintech, or banking
Preferred: knowledge of card networks, acquirers, issuers, interchange, transaction classification, and chargeback processes
Preferred: experience with payment orchestration, smart routing, or multi-business-unit payments platforms
Preferred: experience integrating banking partners or building account funding and money movement products
Preferred: experience with financial reconciliation and settlement reporting
Preferred: experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tooling such as Datadog, Grafana, or CloudWatch
Preferred: interest in developer experience, clean API design, and maintainable systems
