About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Compile, process, and evaluate climate and hydrological datasets, including data QA/QC, gap analysis, data patching, interpolation, and extrapolation using appropriate statistical methods
- Perform hydrological frequency analyses to characterize droughts, extreme wet conditions, and other hydrologic events relevant to water management and design
- Support development of conceptual hydrological models, including catchments, hydrological processes, model inputs, assumptions, boundary conditions, and calibration targets
- Develop, calibrate, and validate hydrological models for regional hydrology and site-specific responses in gauged and ungauged watersheds
- Build and update water balance models using GoldSim, incorporating rainfall, evaporation, catchment runoff, groundwater recharge, upstream inflows, and operational processes at mine sites
- Modify water balance models for site changes, infrastructure layouts, water management practices, operations, post-closure, rainfall scenarios, and climate change scenarios
- Develop and calibrate site-wide contaminant load balance or water quality models in GoldSim
- Conduct sensitivity and uncertainty analyses of model assumptions, parameters, and drivers
- Interpret modelling results and prepare technical documentation, figures, reports, methodologies, limitations, and key findings for project teams and clients
- Collaborate with hydrogeologists, hydrologists, engineers, geochemists, geologists, ecologists, geomorphologists, and environmental scientists on mining projects
Requirements
What you’ll need- A Bachelor’s degree in water resources engineering, hydrology or relevant discipline
- A graduate degree (M.Sc.) in hydrology, preferably with a specialization in modeling through course work or thesis project
- Hands-on experience with GIS software for hydrological and water resources applications, including watershed delineation, spatial data processing, terrain analysis, and preparation of model inputs
- Proficiency in R (or Python) for data processing, statistical analysis, visualization, and automation of hydrological workflows
- Hands-on experience implementing and calibrating conceptual rainfall-runoff models
- Experience with hydraulic modelling software is a asset, including HEC-RAS, Iber, or similar tools
- Hands-on experience using statistical and data-analysis libraries to process, analyze, visualize, and perform QA/QC of climate and hydrological datasets
- Experience with GoldSim for water balance, hydrological, or water quality modelling is an asset
- 3+ years of relevant work experience
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Geoscientist in Training (G.I.T.), Engineer in Training (E.I.T.)
- Valid BC driver’s license
