About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide medical and surgical services under the general and direct supervision of designated physicians
  • Act as first or second assistant during surgical procedures
  • Assist with open, laparoscopic, and robotic General Surgery, including bariatric, colorectal, and breast operations
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care, including daily rounding, orders, post-operative instructions, discharge summaries, clinic consultations, and post-operative office visits
  • Participate in first-call coverage during scheduled work hours across assigned locations
  • Participate in the weekend call rotation with APPs and a surgeon, generally covering 24-hour Friday, Saturday, and Sunday shifts
  • Perform patient examinations and obtain and record medical histories and clinical findings
  • Order and interpret laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Determine diagnoses and therapeutic plans by interpreting and integrating data
  • Administer and prescribe medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines
  • Order and perform appropriate medical and surgical procedures
  • Instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatments
  • Educate patients on health and illness prevention
  • Recommend community resources for patient and family needs
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and clinical information
  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation
  • Communicate with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities
  • Document patient care in the Electronic Medical Record and complete tasks supporting timely, accurate billing
  • Maintain current medical knowledge through CME activity
  • Maintain licenses, certifications, and hospital privileges
  • Support departmental goals, SCHS values, Lean continuous improvement, policy formation, compliance, and medical staff requirements

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Successful completion of an approved Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner course of study and certification as appropriate to the incumbent’s license
  • Unrestricted Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Oregon
  • Physician Assistant requires NCCPA certification
  • Nurse Practitioner requires AANC, NCC or AANP, or AMCB certification
  • If Physician Assistant, ability to establish and maintain a Collaborative Agreement through OMB
  • Unrestricted Federal DEA number registered in Oregon
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid or other federal or state governmental health care programs
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements
  • Current BLS certification
  • ACLS certification if provider will practice moderate or deep sedation
  • Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted
  • Experience with hospital rounding
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
  • Advanced communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population
  • Strong team working and collaborative skills
  • Ability to facilitate and build consensus among health care professionals and agencies
  • Ability to multitask and work independently
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational, written, oral communication, and customer service skills
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to maintain all licenses and certifications current and unrestricted
  • Ability to maintain active hospital privileges
  • Preferred: robotic surgery certification
  • Preferred: experience as a General Surgery first assist, with bariatric and robotic surgery training and experience
