About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Process medical records by coding, abstracting data, and producing information for third-party billing and a complete statistical database
- Review inpatient or observation, same-day surgery, interventional procedure, emergency department, or complex ancillary records
- Identify and sequence principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures for accurate DRG/APC assignment according to Official Coding Guidelines
- Assign codes based on documentation and participate in the corporate compliance program
- Abstract demographic and medical information into the computer system
- Communicate with the Corporate Coding Manager, Coding Team Leader, CDI Specialists, Patient Accounts staff, and fellow coders regarding held accounts, coding changes, coding questions, physician queries, and rebills
- Complete productivity reports, statistical reports, and log sheets
- Perform daily or weekly follow-up of assigned dates and submit updates
- Attend educational programs and apply knowledge to enhance job performance
- Use coding resources including Coding Clinic and CPT Assistant
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent hospital based coding experience)
- CCS, CIC or COC credentials
- An apprentice credential is not sufficient
- Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology
- ICD/CPT experience, Prospective Payment Systems, Outpatient Medical Necessity
- Use of personal computer
- Two to Four years hospital coding experience
- Ability to meet department coding standards for quality and productivity of 96% upon completion of the training period
- Physician coding credentials of CCS-P and CPC are recognized for coding other than inpatient
